Assignment 2 – Formal Analysis Paper – Line, Space, Light and Color.

To prepare for this Formal Analysis paper, please watch the Art 21 video on James Turrell: http://www.pbs.org/art21/watch-now/segment-james-turrell-in-spirituality/. His work directly deals with the element of Light.

Please write a one-page minimum (double-spaced, 12 point max.) visual description of an artwork by James Turrell, from the video. Please note the title of piece, in your analysis. In the visual description, please describe how you see the design elements of line, shape, space, value, light and color being utilized in the chosen piece. NO RESEARCH IS NEEDED. Include the name of the artist, James Turrell, and the title of your chosen artwork.

Then, please comment on the following in relation to Turrell’s work:

Think about a time when light was a significant part of your experience and something that you have not forgotten, like an earliest memory about light. Then write a reflection on retelling this memorable or spiritual moment with light, for you.

In your description please include the following:

Where does the light occur?

Is it indoors or outdoors?

At what specific time of day or time of the year did it occur?

What did you like or not like about this experience with light?

What did the light feel like?

Be sure to give enough details for the reader to be able to visualize these design elements in the work in all its important aspects. Paragraphs should be the basic unit of organization. Check your topic sentences, grammar, and spelling. To find out how effective your description is, draw a picture of what you have written or have someone else read it. If a slide is included, this is in addition to your one-page minimum.
