PAPER #1 – Guidelines

This assignment requires you to locate a specific passage from the course texts and then write a short paper that draws a conceptual map of that passage’s place within the text. Your goal is to produce 4-5 pages of clean and efficient prose that demonstrate your understanding of the text’s substance and architecture.

1) Get a note card from me with a passage printed on it. In class on June 13, I will have a stack of passage-cards from which each student will select one. For each student not in class, I will then draw a passage. **You must hand in the passage-card with your paper.

This is my passage:

POLITICAL POWER, then, I take to be a RIGHT of making laws with penalties of death, and consequently all less penalties, for the regulating and preserving of property, and of employing the force of the community, in the execution of such laws, and in the defence of the commonwealth from forging injury; and all this only for the public good.

2) Find the passage in the text. Each passage has been chosen because it contains thematic clues about the subject and argumentative point of the portion of the text from which it is drawn. Using your reading- and class- notes, identify the portions of the text that relate to the passage’s theme and then scour those pages to find the passage.

3) Write the paper. Your goal is to draw a conceptual map of the text and identify your passage’s place on that map. By write 5 paragraphs.

4) The first paragraph of your paper should identify the passage’s location in the text and provide a succinct statement of its main idea and that idea’s role in the text as a whole.

“This passage forms the third paragraph of Chapter Five and appears on page 800 of the text. In this passage, Locke defines one criterion for natural property rights: our ownership of our own bodies. Property rights are the basis of Locke’s theory of government. Yet this passage illustrates a problem with that theory. On one hand, every individual controls their own body and so we would all seem to be equally capable of owning property and participating in government. On the other hand, property is the source of a variety of forms of inequality, especially slavery wherein one person is allowed to own the body of another person. This passage is an example of the tension between equality and inequality in Locke’s philosophy.”

The remaining paragraphs should expand upon the passage’s meaning both in itself and in various contexts within the texts. A useful (but not required) format to follow is to write a second paragraph which explains the passage’s meaning within the paragraph in which it appears (or if the passage is a complete paragraph, its meaning vis-à-vis the paragraphs above and below it); write a third paragraph which explains how that paragraph relates to the main idea of the chapter; write a fourth paragraph which explains how that chapter relates to the main idea of the text as a whole; write a fifth paragraph which compares the main idea of the text as a whole to other texts, etc. You might conclude with an assessment of the validity of the principle expressed in the passage, and the consequences of interpreting it from one or another perspective.

Each step in your analysis should focus on the principle/concept expressed in your specific passage, and explain its relationship to other parts of the readings. At each level of analysis, your paper should cite/quote relevant passages/phrases from the texts. You must demonstrate your ability to use evidence to support your assertions.

5) Your paper should be 4-5 double-spaced pages (1000-1200 words). No title or bibliography pages. Citations must follow MLA formatting guidelines. Either footnotes or endnotes are acceptable; see the OWL guide to MLA at for a refresher.
