You will conduct 2 interviews that relate to conflicts, problems, or tense power dynamics at work. One will be with an upper-level executive (boss, CEO, owner…) and the other with a lower-level employee.

Both interviews will be structured and will follow the guideline below. Make sure you interview the people alone. Try to make them in-person interviews. When typing up your paper, do not reiterate the interview word-for-word, summarize what the person said for each paragraph.

First Paragraph: Background
What kind of company were you working at when these problems/conflicts occurred?
What was your position and duties at work?
How long had you worked at the company when the problems/conflict began to develop?
How were you feeling about that job before this tension developed?

Second Paragraph: The conflict/problem
Explain, in detail, how the conflict/problems developed and what happened?
Who was involved?
How bad did it get?
How long did it go on?

Third paragraph: Resolution
Did you get anyone else involved to help with the problem?
If so, what was that person’s response to the problem?

How did the conflict/problem get resolved?
How did you feel about the way it got resolved?

Fourth Paragraph: Effects
How disruptive was the conflict in your life?
Did it interfere with your performance on the job?
Did it interfere with your personal life (spill-over)?

Fifth Paragraph: Analysis of personal accountability
Were you experiencing some other outside pressures or stressors at the time of the conflict that had nothing to do with that person that led you to react to the situation in the way that you did?
Thinking back on the situation, do you think there was anything you could have done differently?
How did you feel about the way you handled the problem?
What would you differently if you had to face a similar problem again?

Sixth paragraph: Your analysis and reflection of experience
This paragraph is based on your own analysis of the situation knowing the person (or people) involved.

Is there more to the story than given by the subject?
What alternative explanations can you give for both the development and resolution of the conflict?
If you were involved in a similar conflict, how would you have handled it differently?
What did you learn from the experience?

Seventh Paragraph: Relating back to the OCR and lecture notes
What style of leadership was performed?
What types of power were used?
What kind of conflict was it?
What intra-group dynamics occurred?
What communication strategies were used and what could have been used to improve the situation?
What other information (concepts/theories) could relate to this situation?
