Reading Assignment:

A.) The setting for organized sports, 1890-1950

B.) The setting of organized sports since 1950

Coursework Assignment:

During the 1960’s and 1970’s, the sports community became a target of criticism from a new generation of youths dedicated to “New Individualism.” The concept of this movement was personal fulfillment and entitlement. Answering and satisfying personal needs would take precedence over group and team experiences. This movement eventually spawned the “fitness Movement” that was popular during the 80’s and early 90’s. Again, the focus of the fitness movement was ego-centered and many individual games and sports became increasingly popular.

From the 1990’s into the first portion of this century, however, we appear to be in the midst of a fitness backlash. More Americans are overweight and sedentary as compared to previous generations. Has the pendulum swung back to the days of Victorian principles, or are we experiencing something entirely new in the American sport/fitness culture?

Discuss in a well-thought narrative how and what this fitness movement changed in sport. Make sure you describe the actual change and tell why it occurred.
